About Dogwood Way Business Advisory

Our history, people, and approach to helping family-owned companies run more steadily.

Registered business

Dogwood Way Business Advisory is the official registered business name under which we provide operational improvement advisory services to family-owned companies in Australia.

Established 2011

Margaret Chen founded Dogwood Way in 2011 after fifteen years in operations management roles at mid-sized manufacturing and distribution firms — several of them family-owned. She had repeatedly seen capable businesses stall not from weak markets but from internal friction: unclear handoffs, roles that never caught up with growth, and owners who carried too much in their heads.

The practice began with informal advice to a Newcastle engineering firm whose second-generation owner was preparing to step back. Word spread through accountant and solicitor referrals. By 2014, Dogwood Way operated from a shared office in Sydney and took on its first associate advisor.

Today we work with companies across New South Wales and interstate by arrangement, keeping our client load deliberately small so each engagement receives direct principal attention.

Our people

Margaret Chen — Principal Advisor. Former operations director; leads flagship reviews and succession engagements. Member of the Family Firm Institute (Australasia chapter).

James Okonkwo — Associate Advisor. Background in supply chain and inventory management; supports fieldwork and process mapping on larger reviews.

Priya Nair — Practice Coordinator. Handles scheduling, document preparation, and client correspondence.

How we work

We spend time on site or in conversation with the people who do the work — not only in the boardroom. Our recommendations are written in plain language, ranked by practicality, and sized so a busy owner can act on one or two items without waiting for a full reorganisation.

We do not sell software, take commissions from vendors, or retain ongoing fees unless you explicitly engage us for follow-on support. When an engagement ends, you keep every document we produce.

Values

  • Honesty over optimism. We will tell you if a problem is cultural, structural, or simply a missing habit — and if we are not the right fit.
  • Respect for what you built. Family companies carry history. We do not arrive with a playbook that ignores how you got here.
  • Actionable output. Every engagement ends with something you can use next Monday morning.

Community

Margaret volunteers as a mentor with the NSW Business Chamber’s family business network and speaks occasionally at regional industry association events on operational handoffs and succession preparation.
